Witching and Bitching is (sort of) a misleading title.
There is plenty of witching and bitching in this film, however, that title did not prepare me for what was about to happen in the next 112 minutes of my life.
All movies should be comedies.
Comedy, when done right, breathes fresh air into otherwise stale genres.
Every culture has its Salem.
It seems that every culture has a spooky place. Zugarramurdi is Spain’s spooky place.
Squat toilets are scarier than I imagined.
I have never used a squat toilet and, after watching this film, I don’t know if I ever will.
I was already a fan of the director’s work.
Thanks to IMDb, I discovered that The Last Circus, which I also enjoyed, was written and directed by Álex de la Iglesia.
I’m in love with Carolina Bang.
Yes, that’s her real name. No, she’s not a porn star (at least not that I know of). Not only is Carolina Bang beautiful and great in her role, but, according to Wikipedia, she is quoted as saying she enjoyed “watching films such as A Clockwork Orange and Wild at Heart before sleeping.” I think I need to go lay down for a minute.
All Spanish men are terrible at dealing with their feelings.
The men in Witching and Bitching are all in dysfunctional relationships and struggle with their feelings, which is part of what makes this film so fun to watch.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead!
All Spanish women are crazy cannibalistic man haters.
I’m sure that most Spanish women are lovely and reasonable people who don’t eat men, however, those Spanish women are not represented in this film. The women in Witching and Bitching are more like the crazy Spanish landlord I had in the early 2000s. Fortunately, she never tried to eat me.
No one pulls off a heist like the Spanish.
Where else can you see Spongebob Squarepants pull out an uzi before going down in a hail of bullets or Jesus Christ bring his son to a heist because it’s his day to watch him?
Spanish films love making references to American pop culture and films.
The robbers decide to go south to France after the heist, because in American films robbers always go south to Mexico. Also, a character mentions his daughter’s infatuation with Justin Bieber.
Expressing your undying love to your same-sex coworker during your impending doom guarantees that you will both survive and your coworker will reciprocate that love when the dust settles.
I think that sentence about sums it up.
